PRINTING & APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS How To Print Photo-Trans® Plus In Your Color Laser Copier 1. Mirror your image in the copier's function selection screen so that any text in your image will appear properly on your substrate. 2. Feed the Photo-Trans® Plus according to the copier manufacturer's directions. If you have any questions about how to feed Photo-Trans® Plus in the copier brand and model that you are using, please contact your dealer or your copier manufacturer. IMPORTANT: Photo-Trans® Plus should be fed into your copier with the short dimension first (grain long). HOW TO TRANSFER YOUR IMAGE USING A COMMERCIAL HEAT PRESS (The following instructions pertain to transferring Photo-Trans® Plus to T-shirts, sweatshirts and mousepads. For instructions on how to transfer to other substrates or for hand ironing instructions, please contact your dealer and a copy can be faxed or mailed to you.) 1. Photo-Trans® Plus is intended for transfer to white and light-colored substrates consisting of 100% cotton, cotton/poly blends, or 100% polyester (including most mousepads). 2. Be sure to choose garments that have a tight weave. This is particularly important when transferring to sweatshirts. Best washability is achieved when using a tight weave 50/50 T-shirt. When using 100% cotton T-shirts, be sure the label reads "Pre-Shrunk". 3. For best results, it is important to transfer your image at the correct TIME, TEMPERATURE AND PRESSURE. 4. Preheat the heat press so that the platen is hot before transferring your first image. Cut away any unprinted paper around your image that you do not want to transfer. Place the garment onto the press pad and prepress for 1-2 seconds to remove any wrinkles and excess moisture. Place the transfer on top of garment with the image side down and press at: Manual Heat Presses: 375° F for 15 seconds, use HEAVY PRESSURE. FOR BEST RESULTS: T-shirts: Wait 5 seconds before peeling transfer. No second pressing is required. Photo-Trans® Plus does not require sealing with silicone or bond paper. Important note: Heat presses vary in accuracy. Conduct your own tests to determine the best time and temperature to use with your own equipment. Best results are achieved with air-powered presses. HOW TO TRANSFER YOUR IMAGE USING A HAND IRON Before you start ironing, read these tips to ensure best results: * Make sure that the iron is very hot. * Remember to press VERY firmly the entire time you are ironing (use both hands and body pressure). If you do not press hard enough, the image will not be transferred completely. * Keep the iron on the transfer long enough to make sure that the image is completely transferred to the fabric. The larger the image, the longer it will take to be transferred. Please be sure to keep ironing a large image for at least 5 to 7 minutes. * When you are ready to peel off the transfer paper, be sure to do it as soon as you set down the iron. If you allow the transfer to cool - even slightly - it will stick to the fabric when you try to peel it off. * Small images (4" x 4" or less) are easier to transfer than larger ones. If you have never ironed a transfer before, you may want to practice with a small image on an old piece of fabric first. This way you can get the feel of the process before you start with your good image. WHAT YOU WILL NEED 1. Photo-Trans® Plus color laser copier imaged transfer. Cut out the transfer, leaving 1/8" around the image except on one of the edges where you need to leave 1/4" (this will be used as a 'tab' to remove the transfer sheet when the process is complete). 2. Hand iron 3. Flat, hard, smooth non-porous surface such as Formica or marble; DO NOT use an ironing board, wood, glass, or metal. (Please Note: It is very important that your ironing surface be low enough (approximately hip height) as this will make it much easier for you to apply the amount of pressure required to produce a good image.) 4. Pillowcase or extra T-shirt 5. An item to receive the transferred image (T-shirt, sweatshirt, etc.) IRONING THE IMAGE 1. Preheat the iron on the highest* temperature setting (Be sure to allow enough time for the iron to reach maximum temperature). This may take as long as 8-10 minutes with some irons. Do not use steam! * If you experience scorching when you do your test transfer, reduce the heat slightly and do another test before continuing. 2. Double-over the pillowcase and place it on the ironing surface with the open end hanging over the edge and smooth it flat so there are no wrinkles. Make sure there are no seams on the ironing surface. 3. Place the article to be printed on the pillowcase so that the area to receive the transfer is centered on the pillowcase surface. Smooth out the fabric so that there are no wrinkles. TIP: You may want to iron the pillowcase and the fabric so they are both smooth before ironing on the transfer. Be sure to let both of them cool down completely before placing the transfer on the fabric. 4. Place the printed transfer image side down on the fabric where you want it to be ironed on. Make sure no part of the transfer extends beyond the edge of the pillowcase. Fold up the 1/4" unprinted border. CAUTION: Be very careful not to touch the iron or the heated surface of the transfer paper! Set the iron down in a safe place when you are not using it and keep children away from the iron and the hot transfer surface! 5. The best technique for transferring an image depends on the size of the transfer. Follow the appropriate instructions below: FOR A LARGE IMAGE: Make several slow circles over the entire image area, then place the iron over the lower left hand corner of the transfer image, as shown below. Hold the iron in place for a few seconds to make sure that the transfer sheet will not slip. Then, pressing firmly, move the iron very slowly across the long side of the image, an inch at a time. You may want to wiggle the iron as you move it. Do not iron down the unprinted, folded-up border! Lift up the iron and place it over the upper left corner of the image. Again, move the iron very slowly across the long side of the image, pressing very firmly. Move the iron across the image again, making very slow passes. Do this for at least 2 to 3 minutes. Then move the iron over the entire surface in slow circles, pressing very firmly. Be sure to cover the entire image, including all edges, in each circle. Do this movement for the remainder of the transfer period (3-5 minutes). FOR A SMALL IMAGE: Place the iron on top of the transfer, completely covering it (except the 1/4" border), and hold the iron still for several seconds to prevent the transfer from slipping. Then, pressing very firmly, wiggle the iron over the image, moving it constantly. Images that fit entirely beneath the face of the iron (3" x 4" or less) can be transferred in as little as 15 seconds. For other small transfers, a total of 30-45 seconds will produce best results. TIP: If you are applying more than one image on the fabric, make sure they are spaced far enough apart so that you can iron one without touching another image that has already been transferred. 6. Set the iron down immediately and peel the transfer sheet off of the fabric beginning with the raised, unprinted border. Be sure to do this while the image is still hot! If the image is large, it helps to have a second person who can hold down the fabric and peel off the transfer sheet while you continue to iron back and forth in front of the next section to be peeled. If the fabric gets too cool and you cannot lift the transfer sheet (or it starts to tear), do not keep pulling. Just reheat that area for 20 seconds and start peeling again. 7. Allow the fabric to cool completely on the pillowcase before removing it. STORAGE & HANDLING of PHOTO-TRANS® PLUS For best results, condition Photo-Trans® Plus paper in your location for 12-24 hours before running. Store Photo-Trans® Plus in a cool, dry area and do not remove from carton until you are ready to use. After opening the shrink wrapped package of Photo-Trans® Plus, store the paper in the re-sealable poly bag and include one of the silica gel (desiccant) packages. This will keep the paper from picking up excess moisture on high humidity days and will remove any excess moisture which may be present in the paper. This will not only help improve the quality of your printed image, but will reduce copier jamming as well. WASHING INSTRUCTIONS 1. Turn your garment inside out. This will minimize the amount of abrasion that the transfer will encounter with other garments in the wash. 2. Wash the garment in cold water using a mild detergent. 3. DO NOT USE BLEACH. 4. Remove the garment from the wash immediately and allow to air dry. If you are going to tumble dry, use the air only setting. By doing this over the life of the garment, you will be ensuring that your image stays clear and bright. 5. If your garment needs to be ironed, do not iron directly on the transferred area. Use a Teflon® sheet or baking parchment to cover the transfer before ironing. Note: After washing, colors may fade slightly, particularly on 100% cotton. To restore the colors to their original brightness, place a sheet of regular white paper over the image and iron at low cotton setting. PHOTO-TRANS® PLUS IS RECOMMENDED FOR USE IN THE FOLLOWING COLOR LASER COPIERS:
*PLEASE EXERCISE CAUTION when using the CANON CLC 550 and the KODAK Color-Edge 1550+ for heat transfer production.
